West Nile Virus Detected in Mosquitoes in Sudbury; No Human Cases Reported

NEWS
By Kevin LaHaise

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) has confirmed the presence of West Nile Virus (WNV) in mosquitoes collected in Sudbury, raising the town’s risk level to moderate. No human cases have been reported.

The news came by way of a press release from the Sudbury Health Department, which coordinates mosquito control activities with the East MiddleSex Mosquito Control Project in addition to many other public health services ranging from food service inspection and permitting to inspection of septic systems, community nursing and mental health services.

According to the announcement, West Nile Virus is spread through mosquito bites and can affect both humans and animals. While most people infected do not experience symptoms, some may develop mild flu-like illness, and in rare cases, the virus can lead to serious neurological conditions.

School Rankings Season Arrives On Cue

NEWS
By Kevin LaHaise

The annual U.S. News and World Report high school rankings were released this week, and Massachusetts schools fared quite well overall. Here in Sudbury, Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School (LSRHS); came in at 68 in Massachusetts and 1,659 nationally.

Last year, Niche ranked LSRHS 12 in the state, and Boston Magazine ranked LSRHS 36 in the Boston area.

The various ranking companies use different methodologies which tend to produce significant differences in results. There are also concerns about the quality of the data used in the rankings. Last year the Boston Magazine rankings were based on faulty or incorrect data in at least two areas according to LSRHS Superintendent Andrew Stephens.

Data issues aside, the rankings industry has been expanding in recent years, with firms like Niche even ranking high school athletics programs. LSRHS cracked the top 10 in Massachusetts.

Exploring the intersection of sacred and secular.

I discovered something kind of wonderful, my daughter likes some of my music — at least the songs she doesn’t call “old and tired” — she’s seven, y’all.

Country Road

During this end-of-summer lull between camp and school, our membership to Davis Farmland has been pretty handy. (Note to Davis Farmland and others, I accept sponsorships, and will sell ad space in my articles…we just won’t tell Kevin!) On the way the other morning, she asked for one of our favorites, Take Me Home, Country Roads — “play West Virginia again!”

It was the third time.

Then I saw another song that I knew she’d enjoy, Somewhere Over the Rainbow / Wonderful World by the Hawaiian heavyweight crooner Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. His voice surprised me the first time I heard it, because it conveyed a joyful melancholy with an honesty few achieve.
