Calling & Character

FEATURES
By Rev. Eric Wolf

Retired theologian and UMC bishop, William Willomon, wrote a book by this title that I read around the time I went to seminary. I can’t remember much of it after all these years other than this: we must answer our calling with the entirety of self.

An Unlikely Pairing American cultural identity is much more Greek than anything else. Our foundations were laid during the Enlightenment, which lifted up the ideals of ancient Greek culture and democracy, and particularly influenced by its dualistic cosmology. One of the classic tenets of Westernism dualism is roughly the idea that the flesh is icky, but the soul is pure. The idea of icky flesh deeply influenced the puritanical roots that plague us to this day.

Legislation Could Make Remote Participation in Open Town Meetings a Possibility

NEWS
By Kevin LaHaise

A new bill, Massachusetts House Bill 2274, aims to allow, but not require, hybrid or remote access and participation in open town meetings across Massachusetts. This legislation seeks to address the challenges many residents face in attending in-person-only town meetings, such as caring for young children, a lack of suitable transportation options, disabilities, and incompatible work schedules.

Parting Thoughts

Some weeks there’s a story that’s obviously the most important piece of news to cover. Other weeks are more of a toss up. But during the summer the local news tends be consistently lighter… until a story rolls in that’s truly important to many people in the community.

This week, HOPEsudbury’s Annual Backpack Drive is one of those stories. No, it’s not a fancy, 3,000-word feature story. It’s just an earnest call to action and an invitation to pitch in. Students in Sudbury need the community’s support to get supplies that will help them succeed in the school year ahead. It’s not complicated, but it’s important.

As slow as summer can feel, the return to school is coming quickly, and this drive is a chance to make a direct impact on Sudbury students and families. HOPEsudbury makes it as easy as a few clicks on their Amazon wishlist page. It has never been easier to pitch in, if you’re so inclined.

Onward!
