Welcome back!

The Select Board technically had three meetings this week. That’s a lot of Select Board, though one of ‘em was just the Town Forum on the Open Space and Recreation Plan. After the forum, the Town issued an online survey, which is a great opportunity for residents to share their thoughts, and a perfect embodiment of the saying “this meeting could have been an email.”

MetroWest YMCA Earns National ‘Character at Camp’ Grant Amid Growing Local Focus on Summer Enrichment

NEWS
By Kevin LaHaise

Summer camp excellence is making headlines across the region this month. Deepening its longstanding commitment to youth development, the MetroWest YMCA announced Tuesday its selection as a grantee of the American Camp Association’s (ACA) Character at Camp Grant Program.

The announcement comes at a time when the value of summer programming is taking center stage here in Sudbury, from national awards for local camp operators to expanded summer educational offerings from the school district.

Capital Presentation Zips Through Joint Meeting

NEWS
By Kevin LaHaise

Capital Night has long been an anticipated evening of deliberation in Sudbury’s Town government. It’s a massive joint meeting with the Select Board, Finance Committee, Capital Improvement Advisory Committee and representatives from Sudbury’s two school districts. The Town Manager typically presents the Town Manager’s Capital Budget for the upcoming fiscal year, then department heads present the capital warrant articles for their departments.

But this Capital Night was different from prior years. The Town has a freshly-minted capital plan, which was based on a multi-year process that included an inventory equipment, a facilities assessment, and implementation of new facilities management software. Instead of recurring debate about financial policies and capital planning, participants simply asked a few questions about the warrant articles to gain an understanding, and the meeting moved quickly from start to finish.

Sewataro Sentiment: What Does Sudbury Really Think?

NEWS
By Kevin LaHaise

A rhetorical bridge appears to have been built between the operator of Camp Sewataro and one member of the Sudbury Select Board, as both parties have adopted the same phrase to describe residents calling for a formal planning process for the Town-owned property: a “small but vocal minority.”

The use of the phrase by Select Board member Dan Carty on social media was followed by nearly identical language used by Scott Brody, the camp’s operator, during a public comment session at the February 24 Select Board meeting.

The comments may touch a nerve with residents who could argue that the characterization by Carty and Brody ignores the historically narrow margin by which the property was acquired—a margin that remains one of the tightest in Sudbury’s recent history of big-ticket votes.

Building Committee Wants A Crack At Town Hall

NEWS
By Kevin LaHaise

The February 18 meeting of Sudbury’s Permanent Building Committee was a routine affair. They had to approve minutes dating back to September of 2025. That was the extent of their agenda.

However, some ad-hoc commentary from the committee indicated that they would like to get after a Town Hall renovation that was tabled years ago.

MA Heating Bills Skyrocket – Here Are Literal Cars You Can Lease For Less

FEATURES
By Kevin LaHaise

Natural gas prices are climbing, and home heating bills are a source of significant concern across the state. But there’s no relief in site. National Grid is calling for a rate increase, which could drive rates 10% higher next winter, if approved.

A legislative solution might be the only way to provide consumers some relief, but the legislature is keeping itself busy with a lawsuit to block a voter-approved audit. With that in mind, consumers will have to look elsewhere in their budgets to cut costs, and Sudbury Weekly is here to help. Here’s a list of cars that you can lease (with zero down payment) for less than the all-too-common $650 natural gas bill in Sudbury. Pricing was gathered from RealCarTips.com.

Parting Thoughts

The State of the Union address was this week. A superficial Google search (with no attempt to fact check) tells us that there have been over 100 such addresses since 1790. Sudbury was not mentioned at all — completely snubbed, every single time.
